According to BeDrivers, who quotes unnamed sources, there's a project to bring to BeOS "Universal Driver" support, thus enabling BeOS to use Windows drivers.

I know what you're thinking, this must be another April Fools' Joke, but the date posted it April 2nd. I asked about it to a "BeOS expert" and from his opinion, it's more likely to be "something based on an ndis adapter, which would be very nice, as it would add Windows driver support for all network cards."

We'll wait and see the developments as they surface. In any case, it's a very interesting story.

Yes, you read the title correctly. Inside (and reliable) sources at Opera have let us know that in the coming days (as soon as next Monday), Opera will start the registration process for a closed (for now) beta testing program. The lucky selected will be testing the brand new Opera 7.5 for BeOS/Zeta!

As some of you might know, several Opera employees have been long time BeOS users, and along with outside "influences", a large part of the porting effort (and project starting) can be attributed to them.

It has been a long lasting dream of every BeOS user to have a new version of the Opera browser released, a dream that is now coming true. Stay tuned as we bring you more details about this amazing news!
Over at The BeOSJournal you can read an open letter by Matt Madia about the development of the Mozilla browser for BeOS/Zeta. You can read it in its entirety right here. Definitely an interesting read.
kvdman has asked on BeBits, if there are any BeOS developer that could make a x86 version of SheepShaver (a MacOS run-time environment for BeOS and Linux that allows you to run classic MacOS applications inside the BeOS/Linux multitasking environment).

SheepShaver was once only for the PPC platform and a commercial product. Christian Bauer later made it freeware and for a while ago he published the sources under a GPL license.

SheepShaver is capable of running MacOS 7.5.3 to 8.6, not any version of MacOS X.

ICO will encourage developers to step forward and get SheepShaver for x86 to run on Zeta / BeOS, as Basilisk is only capable of emulating MacOS up to 8.1 running 68K software. SheepShaver will let us run a lot of software only made available on the PPC platform.

BeOSMAX went to CeBIT and of course, went over to the yellowTab stand. And they came out of it with some news.

From what they write, they were really impressed with what they saw. Here's a blurb:
What I saw made me realise they are far ahead at what they are doing. More things are finished than what anyone can think of, and more things are coming.
Interesting... to read the rest of the report, click on the link above and go for it.
The latest issue of the OpenBeOS newsletter is out, and you can catch it right here.

In this #52 issue you can read about how to obtain OBOS right now, using the right tools, an article about "Round Rects" and an editorial by Michael Phipps on how "The Best Things in Life are Free (or close to it)". So don't waste anymore time and go read it.

Also, they let us know that things are on their way so that DarkWyrm can buy the necessary hardware to keep his work coming along for OpenBeOS. Good news!
Do you have some hot story you want everyone else to know? Maybe you reviewed a certain app? Or you just want to vent out on a editorial?

If that is your case, just use the newly available "Submit News" link on the left of the page and start your typing.

Be aware that all submissions will be reviewed by the editing staff of ICO before posting and that this feature will only be available to registered users (about the registration, we're looking into the best way of integrating the site users with the forum users, which untill now have been separated, so stay tuned).
It's that time again! It's time for another BeOS Radio Week!

I was out of town yesterday and most of today, so I missed this one (not by much).

It's a chance to meet people involved with OpenBeOS and other member of the community here in North America. As a bonus, those attending will be the first to find out what the new name is.
